DIY solutions available on internet may seem like the most natural and affordable way to get rid of many skin problems. But, not all ingredients in their pure and natural form are suitable for the facial skin. You need to be extra careful before apply anything on your face because certain ingredients can irritate or even burn your skin. Ritu Khariyan, Cosmetologist, Skinlogics, shares 5 things you should avoid applying to your skin:

  1. Lemon Lemons are enriched with Vitamin C, but applying raw lemon slices or lemon juice on the face, may cause more harm than good. Psoralen, a chemical which is found in lemon can make the skin sensitive to light. So, going out under the sun, after using lemon, may irritate the skin and can cause chemical burn.
  2. Toothpaste Applying toothpaste on skin can increase melanin production and form discolouration and dark spots. Mint is the most common ingredient used in toothpaste that can irritate the skin and cause blemishes. Treating the acne with toothpaste can burn the skin, due to the presence of chemicals which are not suited for skin.
  3. Body lotion Body lotion should not be used on delicate facial skin. As body lotion is thicker in density and greasier, its oily texture can clog facial skin pores and cause the breakout of acne. Body lotions tend to have artificial fragrances that may lead to an allergic reaction.
  4. Petroleum Jelly Petroleum jelly is a very thick occlusive. It makes a very thick layer on the skin and that might cause various skin problems such as acne and breakouts on their skin.
  5. Rubbing alcohol Alcohol is something that’s not meant for your skin. And if you rub your skin with alcohol, it can cause your skin more dry and sensitive which further cause into other skin troubles. Rubbing alcohol may further disrupt the skin’s barrier.

What's your reaction?
