You know it’s going to be a Sonam Kapoor moment when she accepts a fashion event invite.
Over the years, Sonam has been effortlessly reigning the international and Indian fashion scene with her style quotient. A powerhouse of luxury and fashion-forward styles, each ensemble adorned by Sonam has celebrated a heady mix of Indian and International fashion designers and brands.
But that’s not even the best part, it’s the exceptional styling of each garment that perfectly blends and compliments Sonam’s charisma, thus making it a masterpiece. Sonam’s biggest support when it comes to style has always been her sister, producer and celebrity stylist Rhea Kapoor.
As always, Rhea and her style team including Manisha Melwani, Abhilasha Devnani, Niyati Gogri, Bidipto Das, Prabh Malait, Vikar Rattu, Sanya Kapoor and Diptee Agarwal have been simply extraordinary with their vision for Sonam. This year also saw celebrity stylist Nikhil Mansata style Sonam at one of the actor’s biggest moments in 2023.
Every curated ensemble for Sonam has been a celebration of the designer’s craft and craftsmanship. Sonam is one of the few stars who has taken India global through fashion and has won hearts in the process. For instance, in May, Sonam Kapoor created history at the Coronation Concert held for King Charles III at Windsor Castle, to commemorate the historical ceremony declaring him as the 40th monarch of Britain.

Her floor-length custom dress designed by Indian couturier Anamika Khanna and UK-based designer Emilia Wickstead, was a beautiful amalgamation of modern design and traditional Indian craft. As Sonam said in her caption, when she posted a series of her images in the divine dress, she wrote: “Historic moments call for fashion moments. I’m honored to mark the unforgettable occasion of the #Coronationconcert by wearing the collaborative vision of two of the most incredible designers from the two countries I’m lucky to call home..”.

Another iconic moment, celebrating and representing India in the UK was when Sonam draped a gorgeous custom Rohit Bal saree at Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s UK-India Week 2023 reception hosted at 10 Downing Street. Blooming with pride, Sonam’s mint green printed saree was enhanced with botanical prints that added a vibrant hue to the overall look. Giving a modern touch to the six yards of sheer elegance, Sonam paired the drape with a long ivory jacket featuring red floral motifs.

We love the fact that Sonam doesn’t limit herself to just one style or follow trends to fit in. She embraces fashion from all corners and dares to explore it without any inhibitions. Her confidence and ‘I own my vibe’ attitude has made her one of the most exclusive global luxury fashion influencers in the world.

Though we love a luxurious western silhouette on Sonam be it Burberry’s signature ensemble, Maison Valentino’s divine white kaftan dress, Alexander McQueen’s magical blue off-shoulder statement piece or Tamara Ralph pearl encrusted flexible cage skirt, nothing looks more stunning than Sonam in a handcrafted Indian silhouette.
Remember the gajji silk lehenga featuring 20 unique individual panels spanning 25 years of designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla’s history? The hand-embroidered panels featured zardozi, resham, vasli, marodi and tikki in a multitude of floral and Moghul motifs. Sonam looked ethereal in the ensemble which also featured a vasli and Swarovski corset and a silk tissue throw hand embroidered in gold and silver work.

Wherever there is a saree, there will be Sonam. Be it festivals or red carpet events, the saree has always been an integral part of her style quotient. The unconventional yet versatile Anavila striped linen hand-woven saree with goonda flowers blooming from the border floral or JJ Valaya’s bespoke georgette saree draped under a customised silk dupion jacket with a jewelled cummerbund, each drape has celebrated Sonam’s love for sarees. Recently, for the Elle India awards, Sonam adorned a sari-inspired Rick Owens outfit and styled it with a pair of gloves and an oversized jacket. Only Sonam can make a saree look cool and sexy at the same time.

In one of her earlier posts on Instagram in 2023, Sonam quoted Franz Kafka which read as I never wish to be easily defined. I’d rather float over other people’s minds as something strictly fluid and non-perceivable; more like a transparent, paradoxically iridescent creature rather than an actual persona…
While we totally get who she wanted to be in 2023, we are so looking forward to what she has planned for 2024…
