5 Dead in Fire at Serum Institute of India, Vaccine Maker Says Covishield Production Unaffected
A big fire on Thursday at the Serum Institute of India killed five people, a government official said, but the world?s biggest vaccine maker said it would not affect production of Covishield, the AstraZeneca coronavirus shot it is manufacturing locally. Videos and pictures showed black smoke billowing from a multi-storey building in SII?s massive headquarters complex in Pune, Maharashtra, after the fire broke out around 2.45pm. The state government said it has launched an inquiry into the mishap, and a fire audit has been ordered to be conducted on Friday.
Farmers Reject Govt Proposal to Stay Implementation of Farm Laws for 1.5 Years, Demand Full Repeal
Farmers protesting against the three agricultural reform laws have rejected the government’s proposal to stay the implementation of the three legislations for one-and-a-half years, and have reiterated their demand for a full repeal. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha also said the tractor protest on Republic Day would go on as planned. A statement released by the morcha said, ?In a full general body meeting, the proposal put forth by the government was rejected. A full repeal of three central farm acts and enacting legislation for remunerative MSP for all farmers were reiterated as the pending demands of the movement.?

In view of the bird flu scare, regulator FSSAI on Thursday advised people not to eat half-boiled eggs and undercooked chicken, and ensure proper cooking of poultry meat as it came out with a detailed set of guidelines. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has also urged consumers and food businesses ?not to panic? and ensure proper handling and cooking of poultry meat and eggs for safe consumption as outlined in the guidance document.
