Nalini Jaywant’s paternal aunt was the famous singer-actress Rattan Bai, who is the great-grandmother of Kajol.

Nalini Jaywant was one of the famous yesteryear actresses who ruled the silver screen in the 40s and 50s. She was famed for her ethereal beauty and superb acting chops and Filmfare declared her to be the “most beautiful woman in the movies” in the 50s. Even superstar Dilip Kumar hailed her as the “greatest actress he ever worked with”. But, apart from her charming looks and acting, she was also an exceptional singer. While much was known about her professional life, very little was known about her personal life.

Nalini Jaywant’s beauty was the buzz of the town, then and she was often compared to her contemporary actress Madhubala. Did you know, she has a special connection with Bollywood’s one of the hit actresses, Kajol? Well, Nalini Jaywant’s paternal aunt was the famous singer-actress Rattan Bai, who is the great-grandmother of Kajol. While Nailini was a popular name in the industry, she started her career as an artist by going against the wishes of her father.

Reportedly, the Sangram actress found an opportunity to become a heroine only after she started living at her aunt’s place. It was always her dream to become an actress, but her father was against it and did not think it was the right career for her to pursue. But, on the birthday of her aunt’s daughter, Shobhna Samarth, who is Tanuja’s mother and Kajol’s grandmother, a birthday party was organised. 14-year-old Nalini too was present at the party and when producer Chimanlal Desai, father of Virendra Desai, saw her and finalised her as the lead actress for his movie Radhika. When her father came to know of this, he strictly asked her to say no, which she did. But later when her father agreed, she was signed up for Radhika.

As a teenager, she acted in the movie Bahen in 1941, later she gained recognition for delivering hits like Samadhi and Sangram opposite Ashok Kumar. These movies showcased her stellar acting talent and proved that she could breathe life into any character she essays. This won the hearts of millions and earned her immense fan following. She entered the industry in a movie directed by Chimanlal Desai and later she married his son Virender Desai. As per reports, Virendra Desai was a father of one and quite older than Nalini, and after the marriage, he was evicted from his house by his father.

Nalini Jaywant got married twice in her lifetime and had no children. Since she was paired with Ashok Kumar in many movies, there was a rumour of a possible affair between the two. After the death of her second husband in 2001, in 2010, the actress was found dead and nobody knew about her demise until an ambulance came to take away the body. The reason for her death remains unknown.
