Italian club AS Roma have parted ways with manager Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff with immediate effect. Roma have not been able to live up to the expectations this season and are currently placed in the ninth spot in Serie A.

“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said Dan and Ryan Friedkin.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours,” AS Roma stated.

Mourinho took over the charge as Roma manager in May 2021 and guided them to the 2022 Conference League title in Tirana, and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season.

Roma further stated that they will share the update on the new First Team coaching staff imminently.

Recently, Roma suffered a crushing defeat to AC Milan in the Serie A which was the final nail in the coffin as the club decided to part ways with Mourinho. A trio of French goals helped AC Milan strengthen their place in Serie A’s Champions League positions in Sunday’s 3-1 win over feeble Roma.

Yacine Adli’s first Milan goal early on, an Olivier Giroud header 10 minutes after the break and Theo Hernandez’s thumping strike late on earned the points for the seven-time European champions, whose win had a distinctly French flavour at a freezing San Siro.

Italian media report that former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, could replace Mourinho as coach.
