In 2011, when Tim David decided to be cheeky while taking a run in a BL match between Hobart Hurricane and Melbourne Stars, the hard-hitter would not have envisioned that his cheekiness would cost his team five runs. In ‘one of the more bizarre’ moments in the history of the competition, Hurricanes’ batter David played a shot towards the on-side before sprinting for a run. However, the batter failed to land his bat across the line as he rushed back to his position in fear of being run out. While short runs are not unusual in cricket and often the margin between the bat touching a line or not is minimal, David on the other hand plonked his bat and returned after reaching 3/4th length of the pitch.

The on-field umpires noticed the incident and decided to hand the Hurricanes a five-point penalty. This was also the first time a five-run penalty was imposed in the history of BBL.

The entire sequence was uploaded by the official handle of BBL on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. “One of the more bizarre Big Bash moments. Reliving the cheeky move that cost the Hurricanes five runs against the Stars! BBL13,” read the post.

Several fans reacted to the bizarre sequence. One of them felt that the five-run penalty was slightly cruel. “0 runs for running that much is enough penalty, 5 runs is exaggerating,” read the response.

Another seemed to agree as he wrote, “5 penalty runs make no sense, it’s on batters will if they have opted for a run only instead of 2; we have number of examples where players intentionally do actions to safeguard their priorities at that time…That has to be player’s choice!”

In one reply, another replied that former West Indies player Kieron Pollard once did something similar in the IPL. “Pollard did this vs Punjab in IPL chasing, he got a run. Maybe new latest penalty laws/rules went against Tim here,” the comment read.

One social media user looked at the funnier side as he jokingly said that it was a smart way of taking a run while remaining on strike. “Good hack to get a run and yet be on strike”, the reply read.

Coming back to the on-field developments, batting first, Hobart Hurricanes had posted 180 runs losing six wickets in that fixture. Tim David remained not out in that game having scored 22 runs off 12 balls.

Hobart Hurricanes went on to win the match with Melbourne Stars falling short of the target by 24 runs. Hurricanes’ Nathan Ellis was named player of the match.
