BHARATIYA GRAHAK DIWAS 2023: No one holds more power in the marketplace than a consumer who is aware of their rights. In India, upholding consumer integrity is paramount, and a set of rights safeguards consumers against unfair trade practices like overpricing, adulteration, and misleading advertising. To commemorate this commitment, December 24 is observed as National Consumer Day, also known as Bharatiya Grahak Diwas.

BHARATIYA GRAHAK DIWAS: HISTORY

Following India’s independence in 1947, consumer exploitation became a pervasive issue, exacerbated by economic instability and limited technological advancement. To address these concerns, the landmark Consumer Protection Bill was passed in 1986, designating December 24 as National Consumer Day under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

Subsequent amendments to the Act in 1991, 1993, and 2002 sought to enhance its effectiveness. Recognizing the transformations in India’s economy and consumer behaviour, a comprehensive overhaul resulted in the Consumer Protection Bill, 2019, passed by Parliament in August of that year.

BHARATIYA GRAHAK DIWAS: SIGNIFICANCE

The Consumer Protection Act safeguards consumers against a wide array of unfair trade practices, including:

  • Hoarding and black marketing
  • Misleading advertisements
  • False gift offers
  • Deceptive pricing
  • Substandard products

It establishes an effective complaint redressal forum, ensuring efficient settlement of consumer disputes. This empowers consumers to seek justice and holds businesses accountable for their actions.
