In a bizarre turn of incidents, a burglar in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur was caught after he got too comfortable at a house he had broken into and fell asleep. The incident was reported in the Krishna Vihar area of Naubasta in Kanpur, where the house owner’s family member found the accused sleeping in the kitchen and handed him over to the police.

The accused, Deepak Shukla, a Dayalpuram resident entered the house for theft with two of his accomplices. Shukla, who was drunk during the job, fell asleep in the kitchen, while the other two fled with valuables.

According to reports, the owner of the house, along with other family members, had gone to his native place for the last rites of his wife who died recently. He has asked his nephew to check on the house in his absence.

When his nephew went to check, he found that the house was burgled and a stranger was lying asleep in the kitchen. He informed the owner, who came home to find valuables worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh missing.

“When my nephew reached home, he found the gate broken, everything inside the house lying scattered. In the kitchen, he found a man fast asleep,” said Indra Kumar Tiwari, owner of the house.

Indra Kumar’s nephew later handed over the man found in the house to the police.

During the police investigation, it was found that the man had been left behind by his partners-in-crime as he was drunk and had dozed off in the kitchen.

Later, Shukla told police that he was a painter and often burgled houses where he had worked. He said that under the influence of alcohol and had dozed off to sleep in the kitchen while his accomplices ran away with the loot.

Police arrested another of his aides, identified as Utkarsh and were now looking for their third accomplice, Sunit Tiwari.
