The Supreme Court judge who rejected the plea of terrorist Yakub Memon, leading to his execution, has received life threat.

The Supreme Court judge who rejected the plea of terrorist Yakub Memon, leading to his execution, has received life threat. According to police, the threat is of serious nature and the threat letter was not sent as a prank.

Following the threat to Justice Dipak Misra, some personnel of the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed at his residence.

Sources said that the suspect behind the threat conducted reconnaissance of Justice Misra’s residence in the national capital. They further said that the suspect knew the details of the back entrance of the Supreme Court judge’s residence.

Delhi Police has registered a case in the matter and has launched an investigation into the same. The letter states that Justice Misra will be targeted even if his security is increased.

Justice Misra headed the bench of the judges of the Supreme Court panel which rejected plea of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon.

Security of all the three judges of the Supreme Court bench was increased after the verdict.

Memon was convicted in 2007 for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts in which 257 people were killed. Charges of financing the terror attacks that were masterminded by his older brother Tiger and Dawood Ibrahim were levelled against him.

In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. A mercy petition filed by his brother on his behalf was turned down by President Pranab Mukherjee.

He was hanged on July 30 after a night of unprecedented legal action. In the days leading up to teh day of execution, several pleas of relief to him were filed and rejected.

His lawyers and activists had claimed that since he had cooperated with investigators, he did not deserve a death penalty.
