The all-important Ahmedabad Test between India and England ended on a good note for the hosts on day one. However, the pink-ball Test was not bereft of the usual shenanigans which make the five-day game even more exciting.
Reflecting on, skipper Joe Root and fewEnglish players were not happy with some of the umpiring decisions during India’s first innings on day one on Wednesday. Former wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta said he was surprised by the way the few from the visiting playing contingent questioned few of those decisions.
Dasgupta’s reaction comes after watching the English skipper Root’s annoyance with the third-umpire decision which saved Indian opener Shubman Gill wicket earlier in India’s first innings in the second session of the match. Gill was given not out after he was caught by Ben Stokes at second slip off Stuart Broad’s bowling. Stokes claimed that it was a clean catch, however, an unsure on-field umpire signalled the decision upstairs.
When the decision was referred to the third umpire, he reviewed the video footage that showed Stokes clearly grassing the ball while going for the catch. As soon as the decision went against them, Root and company started questioning the third-umpire’s decision that displayed ‘Not Out’ on the big screen at the ground.
Dasgupta in an interviewsaid, “It’s difficult to say what’s going on.” He even defended the English side by saying that “they are not like this”(complaining against umpiring decisions).He went on to add that the visitors were just going by the ‘notion of a pink-ball Test’ and failed to notice what the pitch can offer. But as they collapsed at 112 in their first innings, he added, the Ahmedabad pitch was a ‘different kind of surface’ and not the usual ‘one we see in a day-night Test’.
“There is no justification,”on Joe Root questioning the umpire’s decision, Dasgupta had to say.
Meanwhile, in the 3rd Test, India took the visitors by surprise on the opening day after bowling them out for 112. Axar Patel struck once again, he scalped six-wickets, while Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets. The hosts then reached 99 for 3 at stumps and were trailing by 13 runs.
