Andhra Pradesh Formation Day 2023: Traditional Foods

Punugulu

These are crispy, fluffy, and tasty fritters cooked from idli dosa batter, onions, and spices. In Andhra Pradesh, this dish is a popular method to use up leftover idli batter.

How To Cook:

  1. Chop onions, green chilies and coriander leaves.
  2. Combine yogurt and maida. Mix it thoroughly so that it obtains the consistency of the idli batter.
  3. Add chopped onions, green chilies and coriander leaves to the mixture. Also, add salt.
  4. Heat oil in a pan. Make small balls out of the mixture and fry them in the oil till properly cooked and they get a golden-brown colour.

Pesarattu

It’s a high-protein, low-carb breakfast cooked with whole green gram and spices. Pesarattu is consumed as both a breakfast and a snack.

How To Cook:

  1. Grind soaked green moong dal overnight and make a batter out of it. The mixture should be of dosa batter consistency.
  2. Add chilies, salt, coriander, and onions to the batter.
  3. Heat Tawa and splash some water over it.
  4. Immediately pour some batter and spread it out. When the edges start to rise, sprinkle oil on the pancake. Cook the pancake till it turns crispy.
  5. Do not forget the coconut chutney while serving.

Chakodi

It’s a spicy, crispy Indian snack. Chakodi is a spherical dish made from rice flour.

How To Cook:

  1. Soak yellow moong dal for about half an hour
  2. After boiling water in a pan, Add moong dal, ghee, and salt to it.
  3. Then, add the rice flour in it and mix it thoroughly. Turn off the flame and cover the lid. Let it rest for a while.
  4. After the dough comes to room temperature, add sesame seeds, cumin seeds, and red chili powder. Also, add salt as per taste.
  5. Make small rings out of the dough.
  6. Heat oil in a pan and fry the rings till it turns crisp and golden brown.

Andhra Pradesh State Formation Day: History

During the colonial period, the state of Andhra Pradesh was part of the Madras Province. A significant campaign for independence arose in the region, and the new state, which included the regions of Andhra and Rayalaseema, was formed in 1953. On November 1, 1956, the state of Andhra Pradesh was formed with the incorporation of the Telangana region. It was the first state founded on linguistic grounds in independent India.
