Automobiles, especially cars are the biggest source of air pollution in the world and realizing the fact, manufacturers have now started taking corrective measures. One way to save the environment is to produce more and more electric/ hybrid cars that will eventually replace the conventionally fueled cars, as we have seen in the commercial vehicles, which now run either on electric or CNG fuel. Manufacturers like Volvo and Volkswagen have already announced the aspirational plans to replace all the existing powertrains with either an electric or hybrid one by 2025. However, in a country like India, people are much skeptical about the viability of electric cars. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2018, we compile a list of the top 5 electric/hybrid cars to buy in India, across all the price range.
Mahindra e2O Plus
Starting Price – Rs 5.46 Lakh
The flag bearer of electric cars in India, Mahindra e2O Plus has everything needed from a good electric car. With an all-electric range of 100 km (approx.), affordable price tag, 4 seats and connected technology, Mahindra e2O Plus deserves to get a better response in the market. The e2O started its journey as Maini Reva, from a Bangalore based startup. Mahindra later bought the company and added 2 more seats to the Reva to make it available in its current avatar. In fact, it is the only all-electric hatchback in India, under Rs 10 Lakh.
Toyota Prius
Starting Price – Rs 45.09 Lakh
That’s a pretty big price gap when compared to Mahindra e2O Plus, but the Toyota Prius deserves to be listed here. While there are cars like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord Hybrid priced below Rs 40 Lakh, Prius is a global icon as far as electric-hybrids are concerned and has seen more years on the road than any of the electric cars out there. Toyota Prius is fondly known as a celebrity car for its reputation among the Hollywood celebrities, who love to own this car. In India, though, Prius is yet to achieve the same fame as it is priced at Rs 45.09 Lakh.
Lexus ES 300h
Starting Price – Rs 59.46 Lakh
The newest entry to our list is the Lexus ES300 h electric hybrid sedan. In fact, Lexus as a brand, is completely new to India. The luxury arm of Toyota is known to manufacture some of the most luxurious and stylish cars. Although a bit overpriced in India (thanks to the CBU route), Lexus played it smart to launch hybrid versions in India. The Lexus ES 300h has a combine fuel mileage of 17 kmpl and is priced at Rs 59.46 Lakh.
Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence
Starting Price – Rs 1.28 Crore
The world’s safest SUV also gets a plug-in hybrid version called the Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence. Yes, it’s expensive at Rs 1.28 Crore, but then you get an electric hybrid SUV with an all-electric range of 40 km. Volvo gives you two 220v chargers that you can install anywhere and get the SUV charged in 2.5 hours. The batteries can also be charged via the Regenerative braking System (KERS). Being hybrid doesn’t make this 2.4-tonne beast any less powerful as it has a combined output of 407 hp.
BMW i8
Starting Price – Rs 2.62 Crore
Last on our list is the most special, and most expensive product – the BMW i8 hybrid sportscar. Many don’t associate a sportscar to be electric-hybrid, but the BMW i8 paved the way for the future products that can be both powerful and environment friendly. You will be surprised to know that underneath the hood is a mere 1.5-litre petrol motor with 228 bhp of power. With a top speed of 250 kmph (limited), the i8 has an all-electric range of 37 km. All this can be yours for Rs 2.62 Crore.
