The highly anticipated Kannada film, Kaatera, which marks the final release of 2023, has made a remarkable impact on the box office, setting new records in booking sales. The film’s release on December 29, 2023, has ignited a frenzy among fans, especially in Bangalore, where a fan show at Siddeshwar Cinema, J.P Nagar, witnessed enthusiastic cheers for lead actor Darshan.
Fans, emerging from theatres, expressed their excitement, with some garlanding cutouts of Darshan and chanting passionately. The movie, screening in over 1,600 locations throughout the day, triggered a massive response from fans upon seeing the actor’s appearance.
Reports indicate that a fan show was organised at midnight on December 29, with 43 shows at 3 am, 77 shows at 4 am, 89 shows at 5 am, and 105 shows at 6 am. Kaatera’s advance booking sales had already broken records, selling over 60,000 tickets before its official release date. The pre-booking sales amounted to Rs 1.4 crore, and the numbers continued to rise leading up to the film’s release.
Kaatera, directed by Tharun Sudhir and produced by Rockline Venkatesh, features Darshan in the lead role and marks the debut of Aradhana Ram and Jagapathi Babu. The film unfolds in the agricultural backdrop of Hampi during the 70s, addressing societal issues. Supporting roles are played by Vaijanath Biradar, Shruti, and Kumar Govind. Released exclusively in Kannada, the nearly three-hour movie is said to be based on a true story set in a rural milieu.
The film’s announcement was made on February 16, 2022, coinciding with Darshan’s birthday. Initially produced by Umapathy Srinivas Gowda, Rockline Venkatesh took over and revealed the movie’s poster. Kaatera has created substantial anticipation and buzz within the audience, making it a significant closing release for the Kannada film industry in 2023.
