Internal strife ridden Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLCB) has been dissolved after team’s disastrous performance in the current Cricket World Cup being held in India.
In an order issued in the early morning of Monday, Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe appointed an interim board chaired by the 1996 World Cup winning captain and former minister Arjuna Ranatunga. He has mandated the new board to clean up the system and bring in accountability.
But, the decision of the Sports minister seems to have angered the President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Follow all the action from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 including the World Cup schedule, World Cup 2023 results, and ICC Cricket World Cup points table. Players are vying to top the World Cup 2023 Most Runs and World Cup 2023 Most Wickets charts.
According to reports the President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Roshan Ranasinghe are at loggerheads after the President was not notified about the new Interim Committee.
President Wickremesinghe is expected to discuss the issue with Roshan Ranasinghe during the cabinet meeting on Monday evening.
Sri Lanka Cricket is highly politicalized and the Sports ministry has overriding powers over the Board in all matters including selection of players.
Sri Lanka has so far lost Five matches and has won just two crashing out of the tournament’s semi finals.
The team’s humiliating performance has led to an island nationwide outrage demanding severe action against the Board.
Arjuna Ranatunga has earlier been the Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket Board. Off late he has been attacking the Board for its alleged corruption and nepotism.
