Mumbai: It was an all-time closing high for the Sensex and Nifty. The Sensex closed up 56.21 points or 0.55 per cent at 10224.32. It touched an all-time high of 10237.61.
The Nifty closed up 15.30 points or 0.50 per cent at 3050.80. It touched an all-time high of 3055.65.
The CNX Midcap Index closed up 5.51 points or 0.12 per cent at 4345.50. It touched an intraday high of 4362.25 and an intraday low of 4330.10.
The market breadth was negative, about 788 shares advanced, 1666 shares declined, and 68 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover was at Rs 37,881.81crore.
NTPC, Nalco, HDFC, Ranbaxy Labs and Cipla were the biggest index gainers.
Dr Reddy’s Labs, IPCL, Larsen, M&M and Bajaj Auto were the biggest index losers.
Experts believe that the markets may remain choppy but at the same time the underlying strength will stay up till the Budget.
However, the BSE Small Cap Index closed down 47.81 points or 0.77 per cent at 6147.42. The BSE Midcap Index closed down 5.43 points or 0.11 per cent at 4745.84.
The BSE Metal Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 1.67 per cent at 7097 amid gains in Hindustan Zinc, Nalco, Jindal Stainless, JSW Steel, Sesa Goa, Tata Steel, Welspun Gujarat and Sterlite Industries.
Pharma stocks including Cipla, Ranbaxy Labs, Wockhardt, Lupin, Sterling Bio, Cadila Health, GSK Pharma, Nicholas Piramal and Aventis Pharma also surged up. The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.81 per cent at 3634.89.
Oil stocks like IOC, HPCL, BPCL, Kochi Refineries, ONGC and Reliance also gained. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 0.74 per cent at 4474.56.
Buying was also seen in select capital goods and FMCG stocks. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 0.41 per cent at 7166.38 and the BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.14 per cent at 1910.32.
Auto stocks however lost ground. The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.66 per cent at 4895.86 amid losses in MRF, Exide Industries, MICO, Ashok Leyland, Escorts, Cummins, M&M, Bajaj Auto, Tube Investment, Asahi India, and Amtek Auto.
Consumer durables stocks like Su-Raj Diamonds, BPL and Titan also ended lower. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed down 0.37 per cent at 3193.61.
Selling was also seen in select technology and banking stocks. The BSE IT Index closed down 0.20 per cent at 3676.48 and the BSE Bankex closed down 0.12 per cent at 5085.33.
