BPO high on India's agenda at WTO meet
BPO high on India's agenda at WTO meet
India wants developed countries to add more value to outsourcing by setting up research and development hubs and knowledge processes.

New Delhi: At the WTO meet in Hong Kong, India will be looking at getting more concessions on outsourcing from the West.

India's services sector contributes more than fifty per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product.

Experts say that the BPO industry is well entrenched in India but there are no legal sanctions to it and that is what developing countries like India are calling for at the WTO meet.

Apart from protecting existing BPOs, India wants developed countries to add more value to outsourcing by moving from business processes to knowledge processes and set up research and development hubs.

"We want this to progress and if we get enough concessions we are going to move further," G K Pillai, Additional Secretary, Commerce, said.

At the meet, India will also take up the issue of special visas for Indian professionals to travel to western countries.

"The GATS visa is not an immigration visa. It allows professionals to travel to a country for a short period of time," G K Pillai, Additional Secretary, Commerce, said.

Service industry is a crucial sector in India and Kamal Nath will have to drive a hard bargain when trade ministers negotiate in the Hong Kong ministerial.

Thus, boosting India's services sector is a sure way of pushing its economic growth chart and empowering the millions working in the BPO industry.
