Modest gain in markets amid FMCG rally
The market ended with modest gain on Wednesday. Buying was seen in FMCG, metal and auto stocks.

Mumbai: The market ended with modest gain on Wednesday. Buying was seen in FMCG, metal and auto stocks.

However, consumer durables, technology, capital goods, oil and banking stocks lost ground.

The market ended with modest gain. The Sensex closed up 26.55 points or 0.26% at 10,113.18. It touched an all-time high of 10,191.97

The Nifty closed up 4.65 points or 0.15% at 3022.20. It touched an intraday high of 3048.80 and an intraday low of 2995.30.

The CNX Midcap Index closed down 12.50 points or 0.28% at 4426.95. It touched an intraday high of 4478.20 and an intraday low of 4420.75.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed up 13.05 points or 0.21% at 6,296.33. However, the BSE Midcap Index closed down 8.12 points or 0.17% at 4,804.

The BSE FMCG Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 3.56% at 1,950.79 amid gains in HLL, ITC, Colgate, Shaw Wallace, Tata Tea, P&G and Dabur India.

The total market turnover on Wednesday was at Rs 38,900.68 crore (Rs 389 billion).

The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 4,074.31 crore (Rs 40.74 billion). The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8,158 crore (Rs 81.58 billion). The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26,668.37 crore (Rs 266.68 billion).

Metal stocks like Hindustan Zinc, Nalco, Gujarat NRE Coke, Hindalco, Welspun Gujarat, Tata Steel and Jindal Stainless also ended in the green. The BSE Metal Index closed up 1.66% at 6,994.20.

Buying was also seen in select auto and pharma stocks. The BSE Auto Index closed up 0.34% at 4,828.27. The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.13% at 3,586.84.

However, the BSE Consumer Durables Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.75% at 3,202.39 amid selling in Samtel Color, Mirc Electronic, Blue Star, Titan, and Su-Raj Diamonds.

Losses were also seen in technology stocks like Infosys, Moser Baer, i-flex Solutions, Hexaware Tech, and Patni Computer. The BSE IT Index closed down 0.80% at 3,626.07.

Capital goods stocks like Aban Loyd Chiles, KEC International, SKF India, Gammon India, BEML, Praj Industries, and Larsen also ended lower. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.92% at 7,220.

Oil stocks like Reliance, ONGC and Petronet LNG also lost ground. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 0.94% at 4,458.03.

Selling was also seen in banking stocks like Bank of India, UTI Bank, Oriental Bank, Andhra Bank, PNB, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank and Allahabad Bank. The BSE Bankex closed down 0.35% at 5,164.35.
