Kamal Haasan hit the jackpot hard with last year’s Vikram which turned out to be a considerable success but one of his long-awaited projects is still a year away from release. Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 was announced back in 2018 with filming starting in December that month. Overshooting of budget as well as an unfortunate accident on set that resulted in the death of a crew member put the film on hold for more than a year. Soon the COVID-19 pandemic hit and further delayed the project.

By the time the pandemic had passed, both Kamal Haasan and Director Shankar had their hands full with other projects and Indian 2 entered development hell. The film was largely believed to have been shelved but during a promotional event of Vikram, Kamal Haasan confirmed that Indian 2 was very much happening. After years of turmoil, the shooting resumed last year with Shankar simultaneously directing both Indian 2 and RC15 with Ram Charan to avoid further delay

Recent reports suggest that Kamal Haasan has finished filming his portions for the movie. It is said that only Siddharth’s scenes are being filmed by Simbu Devan, Vishazhagan, and Vasanthan Balan, who worked as assistant directors to Shankar previously.

Indian 2 was announced to be released on Pongal next year. But it seems that fans will have to hold their anticipation for a few more months. Latest reports say that Indian 2’s release has been pushed back to Independence Day next year. It is not known if it is a conscious decision to release the patriotic film on this day or whether there are further production delays.

The film stars Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Rahul Preet Singh, Samuthirakani, Bobby Simha and Priya Bhavani Shankar. Reportedly, Shankar has also brought to life on-screen departed actors Vivek and Nedumudi Venu through CGI and body doubles. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music for Indian 2. It was reported that Netflix bought the digital rights of this film for Rs.220 crore.

Indian 2 is the sequel to the largely successful 1996 film Indian narrated the story of a freedom fighter turned vigilante who takes up the responsibility of uprooting corruption from the system.
