Team India gear up for the second and final Test against Bangladesh slated to be hosted at the Green Park in Kanpur and slated to begin on the 27th of September.
India hold a 1-0 series lead over the tourists following their 280-run drubbing of Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in the opening match of the two-game Test series against the Bangla Tigers.
India were brilliant across all departments of the game including batting, bowling and fielding, as evidenced by Yashasvo Jaiswal’s stunning catch to get rid of Zakir Hasan of Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery in the second innings.
Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar expressed that the contingent hasn’t been doing anything out of the ordinary to maintain their lofty fielding standards, but the general awareness over fitness has proven to be a game-changer.
“We haven’t introduced much,” the assistant coach said.
“Overall, right from when Virat took over, the emphasis on fitness has directly resulted in better fielders,” he asserted.
“If you look at Indian cricket on the whole or even the IPL or domestic cricket, you will see a growth in fielding,” Nayar continued.
“And I always believe that fielding is directly proportionate to your fitness. If you are fit enough, if you can move, if you are agile, you will be able to be in position,” he iterated.
“A lot of domestic cricketers and cricketers in general have emphasized on being fitter and I think that has directly resulted in a much fitter, faster and agile Indian team. ”
The Indian side does not have a designated vice-captain and Nayar added that a particular deputy wasn’t required as the team is filled with multiple leaders.
“You’ve got a lot of captains, ideal captains in this team. The thought process of these youngsters is of a senior player. and with the likes of Virat and Rohit in the dressing room, it just speeds up that process wherein you’re learning a lot faster, ” he added.
When quizzed if he expects the Bangladesh spinner could have a strong say in the second Test, Nayar revealed that it was more about performing on the given day.
“I’m not one for expectations. I’ve always believed expectation is the mother of all s***-ups. For me, it’s just about going there and seeing what happens on that particular day,” he said.
“When there is weather around, you’re always very careful. So you don’t want to go in expecting the ball’s going to turn too much or the ball’s going to sink. I just feel we like to take it as it comes,” he concluded.
