Umran Malik, the speedster from Jammu was arguably one of the hottest prospects among India’s fast-bowling unit. But after a brief run in the international circuit, the quick bowler has found himself out of favour and the former India bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey talked about what needs to be done to revive his international career.
Mhambrey suggested that Umran needed some guidance and a proper structure around him to ensure that he could flourish doing what he does best.
“We need to guide him. He needs to play for a state which has the proper structure. Unfortunately, he is playing for a state where there is no proper structure”, Mhabrey was quoted by Sportstar.
The former Indian bowling coach believes that playing for a state association with a proper structure around them would ensure that the quick bowler would be playing cricket regularly.
He added, “Playing for a state with a proper structure and playing a lot of cricket will help him. We need someone to make that call for him and make sure that he plays for a state where he plays a lot of cricket”.

Umran Malik has not been in the best of form even in the domestic circuit. In the Ranji Trophy, he isn’t amongst the top 100 in the wicket-taking charts which showcases his dip in form. His performances in the Indian Premier League have also been disappointing with him only being able to make a lone appearance for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 season.
But Mhambrey still believes that the fast bowler has a lot to offer but just needs guidance and support from the right people to help revive his career.
“He has the potential, a quick guy who can bowl in the mid-140s. consistently, but someone to guide him at this stage and say, okay, fine, just play cricket and how do we take this, take his game forward”.
Mhambrey even suggested that some of the other fast-bowling prospects have faced similar issues and suggested that they might need to handle them smarter, keeping work-load management in mind.

“Others like Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi have been lost in all this and maybe overlooked by the associations or over-bowled by the associations,” he commented.
“Over-bowled is perhaps the right word, and that’s a little concern because a lot of these guys, when they come into the India team, are burned by their state teams. So we have to be a little smart with them,” he concluded.
