Mumbai’s batting star, Sarfaraz Khan had promised his family and teammates that he would get the big double hundred. The 26-year-old revealed it was tough times for him and his family after his younger brother, Musheer Khan and his father Naushad Khan met with an accident while on their way to join the Mumbai camp before the Irani Cup fixture.
Sarfaraz gave his word that he would go big with the bat and had an emotional take, signifying his knock against the Rest of India side.
Sarfaraz was quoted by PTI saying, “Yes, it has been an emotional week for me. I had promised my family and teammates that if I am set, I will score 200 — a hundred for me and a hundred for my brother (Musheer).”
While he is pleased with his knock, he believes that his father would have been even more happier had Musheer also been a part of this fixture.
“If he (Musheer) had played in the match, abbu (father) would have been prouder. Unfortunately, he met with an accident. So, I thought I must somehow score a double ton in this match,” he added.
The Indian international mentioned that he had spoken with his family and gave a positive update regarding the current status of his younger sibling.
“Yeah, I spoke with him. He is fine but will take two to three months to recover,” said Sarfaraz.
The 26-year-old also created history as he became the first Mumbai player to score a double-ton in the Irani Cup. Speaking on his knack of scoring big, he said, “I’m known to play big knocks. I feel good doing things I’m known for. Mumbai also needed me to bat long”.
The middle-order batter remains focused on continuing his contributions with the bat as he hopes to deliver Mumbai their first Irani Cup title since the 1997-98 season.
“It’s a big opportunity for us to win the Irani Cup after a long time. Back of the mind, I thought of playing as long as possible, putting as many runs on the board as possible which will help the team win,” Sarfaraz added.
At the end of Day 3, Rest of India trail by 248 runs with Abhimanyu Easwaran looking to replicate Sarfaraz’s heroics with the bat to help put Mumbai on the back foot.
