The victorious Indian team was hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Thursday. The team, after remaining stranded in hurricane-hit Barbados, returned to India on Thursday morning via a special Air India flight which carried the players, their family members, support staff, the board officials and several journalists. Later in the day, Rohit Sharma & Co visited the Prime Minister’s residence.
PM Modi had a brief discussion with captain Rohit, head coach Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli and other members of the Indian cricket team. Speaking with the skipper, the Prime Minister asked the reason behind him tasting the mud on the pitch. In reply, Rohit said he just wanted to preserve the memories of the victory and it happened in that moment.
“That moment is so close to close to my heart. Since we achieved it on that pitch, I just wanted to taste it. It was the pitch where we played and won the World Cup. It was a special feeling and I wanted to keep it in my mind forever,” Rohit told PM Modi.
“These guys have worked so hard for this trophy. We have come closer to the World Cups in the past but somehow we missed it. But it was the team’s effort that we could achieve it. It was the pitch where we had achieved it so it just happened in that moment,” he added.

PM Modi further asked Rohit about his special walk while heading towards the podium to collect the World Cup trophy in the post-match presentation. Rohit set social media ablaze with his act. Several fans compared it with former WWE Star Ric Flair’s famous walk while a few drew parallels with Lionel Messi’s walk with the FIFA World Cup trophy after Argentina were crowned champions.
Rohit stated that his teammates wanted him to do something different and that’s what he came up with.
“It was a huge moment for us and we have been waiting for it for so long. So the boys told me that don’t just walk up to the podium and collect the trophy. Do something different,” the Indian captain said.
“Ye Chahal ka idea tha kya,” asked PM Modi, to which Rohit said, “It was Chahal and Kuldeep’s idea.”
