NIT Rourkela Confers 1,988 Degrees in Diverse Disciplines at its 21st Convocation
Eight students were awarded the Institute Gold Medal in recognition of their academic achievement, and five students were given the Endowment Gold Medal

National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) recently commemorated its 21st Convocation on January 20. A total of 1,988 degrees, including many Dual Degrees, were awarded on this occasion. The distinguished chief guest of the occasion was Shri Polavarapu Mallikharjuna Prasad, who serves as both the Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Limited.

The academic prowess and diversity of NIT Rourkela were demonstrated by the wide range of degrees that were awarded during the convocation, which included 17 B.Arch., 961 B.Tech., 38 Dual Degree (B.Tech. & M.Tech.), 54 integrated MSc. (5 years), 168 M.Sc., 520 M.Tech., 3 M.Tech (by research), 21 MA, 39 MBAs, and 167 PhDs.

Notably, over 20 per cent of the graduating cohort, or 457 female students, received degrees, reflecting a notable increase in the proportion of female graduates across several programmes. The institute’s female-to-male ratio has significantly improved, going from 1:6 to 1:4 in recent years. This year alone, 173 female students completed Bachelor’s programmes, 228 completed Master’s programmes, and 56 received their PhDs.

Shri Polavarapu Mallikarjuna Prasad, in his address, emphasised the promising future for young engineers in the growing Indian economy. He highlighted the impact of globalisation on job opportunities and praised India’s vast and highly talented human resources. “Because of its vast and highly talented Human Resources, India has become a favourite destination for many MNCs to set up their production lines in the country.”

Eight students were awarded the Institute Gold Medal (10 grammes of 22k gold) in recognition of their academic achievement, and five students were given the Endowment Gold Medal. Moreover, 59 students received recognition as Branch Topper Medalists or Silver Medalists. NIT Rourkela’s commitment to showcasing regional art and skill through its convocations has earned accolades from various quarters, including the former President of India, Union Ministers, parents, and the local community. The convocation dress code, featuring Sambalpuri design costumes, serves not only to honour the cultural richness of Odisha but also supports local handloom weavers by providing a national platform.
