Top IITs Increase Cut-offs For Lower Branches Ahead Of Counselling Session: Report
In previous years, all the branches of these top IITs used to close at much higher ranks.

The counselling process for 59,917 seats in 121 institutions including the IITs and NITs has already started. Following the third round of seat allocation, the online reporting window will stay open till 5 pm on July 15. Students who have already received their allotted a seat are advised to submit the documents and pay the acceptance fee before the last date to avoid last-minute hassle. Students who fail to respond will be excluded from the further counselling process. As per several reports, the authorities have decided to increase the cut-off marks for lower branches. Amit Ahuja, career counselling expert at Allen Career Institute, spoke about this in an interview. He said that according to the data released, following the three rounds of counselling conducted so far, students have not prioritised lower branches of top IITs like Mumbai, Madras, Kharagpur, and Hyderabad like other years. This is because these institutions have decided to discontinue the facility of changing the branch after the conclusion of the first year.

He further mentioned that adding to this the authorities have also increased the cut-off marks of these lower branches in the top IITs, allowing students with lower ranks to get admission to these institutes. In previous years, all the branches of these top IITs used to close at much higher ranks. For example, the closing AIR for IIT Bombay’s Chemistry branch was 7065, IIT Madras’s Biological Science was 10129, IIT Kharagpur’s Applied Geology was 12262, and IIT Hyderabad’s Industrial Chemistry branch was 8802. Now as the facility of branch upgrades has been stopped, students with lower AIR will also get a chance to get admission to these top IITs of the country.

Amit Ahuja further explained that previously students preferred to take admission to lower branches in top IITs and change the branches based on their performances than taking admission to IITs that do not fall among the list of top IITs. The students used to take admission to the lower branches despite the availability of seats in core branches of the IITs that were established between 2012 and 2018. Now with this decision, the students are considering taking admission to those newer IITs, providing a chance to students with lower ranks to get admission to top IITs. Students are now seen prioritising other IITs where the branch upgrade chance is available.
