Vijay Varma had an eventful 2023 with four releases – Lust Stories 2, Dahaad, Kaalkoot and Jaanejaan. Barring Lust Stories 2 which received a mixed reaction from the audience, the others won him rave reviews. And to recognise these projects and his performances in them that enhanced his body of work last year, the News18 Showsha Reel Awards 2024 honoured him with the OTT Star of the Year award.
Speaking exclusively to us shortly after, he said that despite being a professional actor for the last 16 years, he often finds himself thinking of the little boy who dreamed of making it big in the film industry. “I can’t believe that I’m the OTT Star Of The Year! Sometimes I do some things that impress me but that doesn’t happen too often. I pinch myself because I’m living a life that I always dreamt of in my home in Hyderabad. I didn’t even know what it means to be an actor and how it feels to actually act. I salute to that wide-eyed dreamy boy," he told us.
When quizzed about his favourite work of himself last year, he said, “They were all special in their own way. Dahaad, for me, was very special because I was reuniting with Reema, Zoya and the Excel family after Gully Boy, Ghost Stories and Mirzapur. My character in Dahaad was a tough one to pull off but I was playing a serial killer. But it got me a lot of awards."
Vijay added, “Kaalkoot was a passion project for me. It was something that moved me when I read it. I just wanted to sink my teeth into it. It turned out to be such a beautiful experience. People loved it. Jaanejaan was also widely celebrated. It was a reunion of me and my old friend Jaideep. It also gave me the opportunity of working with my childhood crush, Kareena Kapoor. I got to hand out with her too. Jaanejaan was a beautiful story."
He also stated that his short film titled Sex With The Ex in the anthology film, Lust Stories 2, will always be very close to his heart as it gave him the chance of getting to know his girlfriend, Tamannaah Bhatia. “It was special because I got to meet the girl," he said with a blush.
At the event, Vijay further spoke about his evolution as a fashion sensation who time and time continues to impress the fashion police with his gender-fluid sartorial sensibilities. “I’m a fashionista. It’s a streak I always had in me. My mom says that when I was a little boy, I used to spend a lot of money new denims and t-shirts. I remember spending a lot of money on clothes during college days and then I was broke for ten years and so, I couldn’t do much fashion. But as soon I started earning money, I got back to it," he stated.
