Polaroid AI Trend: What is it?
People are using AI to create vintage-style Polaroid pictures. This trend, which is all over TikTok, Instagram, and X, usually takes the form of an AI-generated instant Polaroid-style photograph of a person hugging their younger self, but you'll also see Polaroids of creators with celebrities, friends, partners, and even loved ones who have passed. Most people are making their Polaroids with Nano Banana, Google Gemini's latest AI image creation tool, but you can use just about any AI image generator to hop on the trend. Some celebrities who've posted their own version of the Polaroid AI trend are Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Samia Longchambon, and Stephen Mulhern. Search for the #polaroidtrend hashtag on TikTok to find plenty of nostalgic Polaroid AI creations and, hopefully, some inspiration for your own Polaroid AI picture!
How to Do the Polaroid AI Trend
Go to Google Gemini. You can do the Polaroid AI trend in Google's free AI chatbot Gemini, which you'll find at gemini.google.com. If you'd rather download an app, you can get the Gemini app from the App Store on an iPhone/iPad, or from the Play Store on your Android. You can use any AI that generates images to do the polaroid trend, including ChatGPT, but most people do the trend with Gemini. Gemini is totally free to use–all you'll need is a Google account.
Upload the two pictures you want to combine. Most people do the trend using a picture of their current self hugging their younger self, a celebrity, or a loved one, but you can hop on this trend with any two images that spark nostalgia. For best results, use pictures that clearly show both subjects' upper bodies and faces. To upload: Click or tap the +. On a phone or tablet, tap the Gallery icon. On a computer, click Upload Files. Select the photos you want to combine. Need prompt ideas for your AI polaroid picture? Jump down to Other Polaroid Prompt Ideas.
Type or paste the prompt. To get the best Polaroid picture, you'll want to be as specific as possible with your request. Here's an example prompt to create a Polaroid picture of any two people: Create a realistic, high-quality 1980s-style candid Polaroid picture using the people in the provided images. The two people are hugging and smiling warmly, glancing at one another. The room is dim, but the people are illuminated by the bright flash of the Polaroid camera. The photo should not include any props, and the background should be a simple, soft curtain with no visible curtain rod. The photo should have a soft blur, a hint of film grain, and should look like an instant photo. Do not change or edit the faces at all. Press ↵ Enter, ⏎ Return, or the submit button. Gemini will take a few moments to create a Polaroid photo using the photos and description you provided. If there's anything about the picture you don't like, you can tell Gemini to make changes as needed. For example, if the photo doesn't look dark enough, say, "create the photo again, this time in a darker room." To download the picture, click or tap the image, then click the down-arrow icon at the top-right corner.
Other Polaroid Prompt Ideas
Hugging your younger self Create a realistic faded Polaroid picture using the people in the provided images. The child is in the adult's lap, and the two are hugging and looking happy. The room is dim, but the people are illuminated by the flash from the camera. The background is a muted, solid-colored curtain with no decorations. Do not alter the faces at all. The overall photo effect should be soft and have some film grain, and look like an instant photo.
You and a celebrity Create a realistic Polaroid photo using the two people in the provided images. The image should be faded like a realistic old instant Polaroid picture. The two people are meeting in public for the first time, and the woman is very obviously excited to meet the man, who is a celebrity. The man smiles warmly for the camera and has his arm around the woman. The photo should be close-up, but it should be evident from the background that the two are being photographed in a restaurant at night. Do not alter the people's faces at all. Modify this as needed. For example, you could say "the person in the red shirt is obviously excited to meet the person in the black suit."
You and a loved one who has passed Create a realistic Polaroid picture using the two people in the provided images. The picture should look like it was taken decades ago, with slightly washed-out colors and noticeable fading. The two people, who are family members, are smiling with their arms around each other, looking very happy to be together. The photo should be taken close up, but it should be noticeable that the two are at a busy beach on a sunny day. Do not edit the people's faces other than to make them smile and look happy.
A romantic photobooth moment Create a realistic instant Polaroid photobooth using the people in the uploaded images. The couple is in a Polaroid photobooth together in the 1990s and is looking at each other sweetly for the camera. The flash should be bright, but the background (which is a simple photobooth-style curtain) should appear dim. Do not edit the people's faces at all. This is an old Polaroid, so the colors should be muted and washed out due to fading over several decades.
