New Delhi: Bodies of 11 people were recovered on Friday from Bhopal's Khatlapura Ghat after a boat, which had set out for immersion of Ganesh idol, capsized. An official of SDRF said that search operation is underway.
According to local reports, 18 people were aboard the boat when the boat turned over in Lower Lake of Bhopal. Those killed are said to be residents of Piplani. Unconfirmed reports said 13 people drowned in the incident. The families of the victims have held the administration responsible for the deaths, alleging that the devotees hadn't been given life jackets when they were setting out.
Although the Prempura ghat along the lake had been designated as the place for immersion, the 20 devotees went to another ghat at Khatlapura. Despite an NDRF team being present there, no one is reported to have stopped the devotees from mounting the boat. An ambulance was also not present at the spot.
The Bhopal police have booked two after the kin of one of the deceased filed a complaint. Chief Minister Kamal Nath called the incident "highly unfortunate" and ordered a magisterial probe. Nath has also announced ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin.
Meanwhile, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh and government jobs for the affected families.
