Guwahati: At least 1,615 cadres of three National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) factions on Thursday laid down arms here before Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and state Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The move came three days after the Bodo Accord was signed.
NDFB founder-president Ranjan Daimary, NDFB (Progressive) chief Gobinda Basumatary, NDFB (Dhiren) president Dhiren Boro, NDFB(S) chief B Saoraigwra were among those who laid down their arms before Sonowal and Sarma, who is the convener of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
Sonowal hailed it as a great day since all factions of the NDFB laid down their arms for peace in the region, especially the Bodoland Territorial Areas. "All ranks of the NDFB should now maintain civil norms and do better for society. We will do for better for Bodoland and Assam," he said.
Sonowal said his government is committed to implementing every scheme and policy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah envisaged in the accord, “which will ensure a life of dignity for each and every NDFB cadre”.
Sarma said the government now wants to start peace talks with the Paresh Baruah-led United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I). “He has given a positive response and we are hopeful that all things will start shortly,” said Sarma.
“Not only ULFA-I, we wants to bring all arms revolutionary groups of Manipur to the table of peace talks. The process is on in a positive direction. We will established permanent peace in Northeast by 2024,” he added.
