New Delhi: Celebrities be careful before endorsing beauty products. You may get into trouble for lying about the effectiveness of the product you endorse. Malayalam superstar Mammootty has learnt the hard way. Kerala's most popular soap Indulekha, which he endorses, has been forced to pay a compensation of Rs 30,000 to a consumer who went to a Consumer Court alleging that soap is misleading the consumers about its effectiveness.
K Chaathu, a 67-year-old person from Mananthavady in Wayanad district of Kerala, has created history by getting Rs 30,000 compensation in an out of court settlement. He had gone to the Consumers Redressal Court seeking a compensation of Rs 50,000 from the Indulekha soap company for its misleading advertisement endorsed by Mammootty.
He had alleged that the advertisement claims that Indulekha soap makes the user of it fair. He said, "Mammooty is a big star. We trust him. Because he says Indulekha soap makes dark people fair, lot of people use it. I used it for a long time. But, nothing has happened. I am still dark. What they say in these advertisements are nothing but white lies."
According to Malayalam media reports, 'Soundaryam Ningale thedi varum' (Beauty will come in search of you), the tagline of the Indulekha white soap seen quoted by Mammootty in advertisements, had been questioned by a consumer in September 2015. Instead of fighting the case, Indulekha soap decided to pay compensation and end the case.
This incident has once again opened up age old debate on misleading advertisements by beauty products manufacturers and the celebrities who endorse them.
