Dangling cable wires have become an eyesore to the general public and GHMC has decided to cut them and make the stretches look neat for the forthcoming Conference of Parties (CoP), GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu said. Speaking to City Express, he said that the cable wires hanging on to the electricity and street-light poles will be removed from PV Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Mehdipatnam to Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), Madhapur and other roads from Charminar to Erragadda passing via M J market and Lakdi-ka-pul. “We want to keep the main roads and central lighting poles free of the hanging cables by the time the bio-diversity meet begins in October,” he added.
The Corporation had given August 15 as the deadline for the cable companies and operators to voluntarily remove their cables. However, on the operators’ request, the deadline has now been extended to August 20. Furthermore, the issue was also brought to the notice of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Commissioner said.
Krishna Babu further informed that a team of GHMC officials will be sent to Mumbai to study the Common Ducting System which was undertaken by the the MMRDA on Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. They have laid about 40 kms common duct system through a private agency and have given it on lease to the cable companies.
The same would be implemented in GHMC limits on certain important roads on an experimental basis. The GHMC will appoint consultants to study the BOOT model and based on the recommendation of the consultant, the GHMC will go for international bidding. The recent caving on the busy Punjagutta Road has exposed a zig-zag laying of large numbers of underground telecom, internet cables, which have made it difficult for the GHMC to take up the restoration works. ``If we had a common ducting system, this problem would not have occurred as cable would have been placed in a common duct,” he said.
GHMC has asked the cable companies to go for a common duct on road stretches near the Police Control Room, Basheerbagh, Legislative Assembly, Khairatabad, Ameerpet and SR Nagar. The Charminar-Falaknuma and Indira Park to Nallakunta crossroads, the telecom, internet and cable operators have sought permission to remove hanging wires from some of the main roads and take them through the side roads. But the move could not move forward as there does not seem to be unanimity among the private operators and works were stalled.
