HYDERABAD: It’s holiday time, and a great way to spend this time is to be with your family and friends. When it comes to friends, books definitely top the list. A good book is like a good friend. Considering the holiday season an ideal time to indulge in reading, the Hyderabad Book Fair Society will be organising the 26th edition of the Hyderabad Book Fair from December 15. Previously scheduled to take place from December 1 at the Nizam College, the fair had to be postponed to December 15 because of problems in getting the venue. “We did not get permission for Nizam college because the venue was in the radius of the assembly. That is why we had to postpone the fair to December 15 and change the venue to People’s Plaza,” clarified S Srinivasa Rao, president of Hyderabad Book Fair Society. Venturing into various statistical details about the reading habits of the city’s denizens, Rao added,“Over the years, we have noticed that women of the city have shifted their interest from television shows to book-reading. Another thing is that parents are ready to spend for their kids to purchase books. Such acts clearly indicate that the reading culture in the city has been elevated.” Apart from 250 stalls, over 50,000 varieties of books (in every genre, right from fiction to non-fiction, from devotional to self-help, among others) and over 2000 publications, the 15-days book fair will witness something new and exciting everyday --- around 20 new books are expected to be released during the fair, a walk for books will be conducted on one of the days and various other programs for students and others will take place. Also, every book will be sold at a discount of 10 per cent. While the entry ticket per person will cost `5, the society has distributed a number of free passes across the city, which can be shown at the entrance (the free passes distributed for Nizam college can be used for People’s Plaza). Also, teachers, professors and students can produce their identity cards at the entrance to enjoy the privilege of a free-of-cost entry at the book fair. The 26th Hyderabad Book Fair will begin on December 15 and go on till December 25 at the People’s Plaza, Necklace Road.
