Mumbai: The Krishna Hegde Pratisthan Dahi Handi, rated amongst the top 5 Dahi Handi’s of Mumbai – Thane will not be held in 2015. This was announced on Monday by former Congress MLA Krishna Hegde. The Handi which was the biggest in the western suburbs of Mumbai has witnessed huge celebrity turnout from both bollywood and cricket.
Super stars like Ajay Devgan, Hrithik Roshan, Rohit Shetty, Madhur Bhandarkar, Shreyas Talpade, legendary cricketers like Dilip Vengsarkar, Karsan Ghavri, along with Sreeshant, Vinod Kambli, and a host of other celebrities have made their presence felt in one of Mumbai’s most glamorous dahi handi's.
In 2014, Hegde had scaled down the prize money and also had a 6-tier cap on the pyramids. “This year as well the rules and regulations have made the hosting at these events more difficult,” Hegde said.
The 20-feet-cap means pyramids cannot go over 4 tiers. Moreover, the Govinda at helm has to be over 12-years-of age and all Govindas in the lower tiers have to be over 18 years of age. A validated birth certificate and insurance is a must.
Earlier, NCP Leader Jitendra Awad, another big Dahi Handi organiser, had called off the event.
Last year as well, there were 2 deaths and over 350 casualties during the celebrations. Some of the Govindas had been severely injured in the incidents.
With such mishaps, an event intended to be celebrated for fun and religious sentiment suddenly turns dangerous within seconds and the organisers can be faulted. This has made it even more risky as some mandals in their frenzy do not listen to repeated requests from organisers who are on the stage or adhere to all the rules of the ‘adventure sport’
