New Delhi: The arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student's Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar took a political turn on Friday evening after he claimed that he was arrested because they have defeated ABVP in 2015 JNUSU polls.
Kanhaiya was arrested by the Delhi police on Friday afternoon. On Thursday a case under charges of sedition was registered against him after he was reportedly found associated with an event in JNU campus where they condemned Afzal Guru’s hanging.
He was produced before a city court in the evening where Kanhaiya said, "I was targeted because we defeated ABVP in elections in securing key posts. I wasn't part of the event related to Afzal Guru."
While alleging that it was a well calculated arrested, he said, "I demand justice." "Ten students not related to the JNUSU organised the event. I intervened only when clashes started between them and ABVP. I would like to urge the court to see go through the video footage before taking any decision," he added.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police pleaded for 5 days police custody (PC), which the court rejected and sent him to three days PC for further investigation.
Earlier in the day, the Centre stepped into the controversy and Home Minister Rajnath Singh directed the police to take action against those raising anti-national slogans.
"The government will not tolerate any anti-national activities in the country. I have instructed Delhi Police to take strongest possible action against those involved in the incident," said Singh on JNU campus row.
This came after Delhi Police registered a case of sedition in connection with an event aiming against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
The FIR was filed following complaints by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Maheish Girri and party's student wing ABVP.
