New Delhi: Atleast eleven people were reportedly killed due to heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh. East Godavari, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts so far reported five, three and one death respectively.
Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has announced an ex gratia of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of the deceased.
Reddy has also directed the administrative machinery to undertake rescue and relief operations on a war-footing in the affected areas.
Nagavalli and Vamsadara rivers are in spate, inundating more than 600 villages and disrupting road traffic in the region.
Rescue operations are on and more than 10,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas around the coastal district of Srikakulam.
Meanwhile, traffic along the arterial Kolkata-Chennai National Highway has been severely hit, Disaster Management Commissioner Debabrata Kanta said. In Hyderabad, several roads are waterlogged causing severe traffic jams.
Air traffic from and to Visakhapatnam continued to remain disrupted for the second day on Friday with rainwater entering the runway and terminal building of the airport.
The Met department says that more rain is expected in the next 48 hours. The Cyclone Warning Centre at Visakhapatnam has also said that the stormy weather is expected to last for another two days.
