It came as a blow to the BJP as Congress registered massive victory on all the three seats of Dharchula, Doiwala and Someshwar in the Assembly bypolls.  Chief Minister Harish Rawat won the Dharchula Assembly seat with a margin of 20,604 votes on Friday.

Rawat, who took charge as the eighth Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on February 1, 2014, will complete six months of his tenure on July 31.

Rawat defeated BJP's BD Joshi in a direct fight between the Congress and BJP from the Dharchula seat and polled over 30,000 votes.

Congress’s Rekha Arya won from Someshwar seat by a margin of 10,685 votes, defeating BJP’s Mohan Ram and got 23,010 votes.

Another feather added to Congress’s cap as Hira Singh Bisht also won from Doiwala seat. Celebrations started across as Congress won from this seat after 26 years.

Constitutionally, it is mandatory for Rawat to be elected as a Congress MLA from an assembly seat within six months from the date he took charge as the CM to continue on the post.

At present, the Congress has 32 members in the state assembly while the BJP has 28. The Uttarakhand assembly has a total strength of 70 members. A party needs 36 members to remain in power. Three independents, three BSP MLAs (including two suspended members) and one UKD member are supporting the Congress government in the state.
