Of all the places why were the agents and refugees keen on sailing to Christmas island near Australia?
According to sources in Central Crime Branch , Christmas island located on north-west coast of Australia is targeted by asylum seekers hoping to get to Australia. IGP Pratap Reddy said the refugees, who escape from camps in Tamil Nadu are made to believe that those before them who made it to the Christmas Island are leading a life of dignity.
Till now 13 cases human trafficking have been registered this year.
Fed with these dreams, a youth from one of the camp who had completed MBA had paid Rs 1 lakh to agents to make a new beginning in Australia. The existence of hundreds of such dreamers in these camps is revealed with as many as seven cases of human trafficking cases being registered in India.
However, most of the time the refugees sail in boats which are not strong enough to survive in the sea and reach Australia.
The Australian media reported the death of 50 asylum seekers after their boats sank near Christmas Island in December 2010. In June this year two boats carrying asylum-seekers sank off Christmas Island leaving 18 dead.
