The State government on Sunday announced that the merger of all five Anna Universities of Technology (AUTs) in the State with the Anna University in Chennai would come into effect from August 1 with the enforcement of the Tamil Nadu University Law (Amendment and Repeal) Act 2011.
A press release here said that the Anna University was created in 1978 by former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran in a bid to provide deserving focus to technical education. In her previous tenure as Chief Minister in 2001, J Jayalalithaa had converted the varsity into an affiliating University and brought 237 institutions across the State under its fold.
This was done to improve the standard of education provided to the students and for constant monitoring of the colleges to ensure quality. This move made sure that degrees awarded by Anna University were recognised worldwide.
However, in 2007, the Anna University was split and five AUTs were created in Chennai, Tiruchy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Madurai. The release pointed out that just by increasing the number of Universities, the standard of education would not improve. Even if there was only one varsity, a bright future for the students could be ensured only if it provided high class education. “By breaking the Anna University, its strength was lost,” the release said.
Therefore, once the government headed by Jayalalithaa took over in 2011, a legislation was passed in the Assembly paving the way for the merger of the AUTs with the Anna University.
However, to ensure that the merger took place in an efficient manner, a Monitoring Committee headed by Sheela Balakrishnan was created. The committee did a comprehensive analysis of the five AUTs before submitting its report to the CM, who then ordered the implementation of the merger with effect from August 1. More: P3
