New Delhi: Baichung Bhutia, made the captain of the Bengal squad, will not play in Santosh Trophy, as he did not register with the state before the start of the tournament.
"Baichung is not registered even as an Indian player, so the All-India Football Federation did not allow him to play," the Indian Football Association secretary, Mr Subroto Dutta said.
Bengal will have to do without Bhutia now, though his international registration transfer certificate finally arrived on Tuesday night from M P Land, the club in Malaysia that he played for before signing in with East Bengal on Saturday last.
The IFA had also appealed to the AIFF to allow them to register Feroze in place of injured Madhav Das, which was also turned down.
It means that Bengal will have to continue with their campaign with only 19 players.
