CHENNAI: Around 650 persons from various political outfits, including the BJP and CPM, were arrested by the police for attempting to stage road and rail rokos condemning the petrol price hike, here on Thursday. Opposition parties across the country had called for a Bharat bandh opposing the unprecedented fuel price hike. However, the bandh evoked only a lukewarm response as all commuter services continued to ply.The BJP organised a road roko at Anna Salai near Anna Statue. The supporters led by BJP senior leaders Pon Radhakrishnan and L Ganesan started the roko at 12.20 pm, disrupting traffic for about 30 minutes. A hundred BJP cadre were detained.At Thirunindravur members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) tried to stage a rail roko. The police arrested 41 protestors. Socialist Democratic Party of India members attempted to block rail traffic at Central Railway Station and the police arrested 150 members.Forty BJP cadre were arrested during their bid to stage a rail roko at Tambaram. CPM cadre led by party North Chennai district secretary Soundararajan attempted to block traffic in Purusaiwalkam Road. Forty six of them courted arrest here. Similar attempts were made by the party cadre at Kundrathur Bazar where 34 were detained while 20 persons at Ayanawaram and 20 others at Seven Well Mint Street were picked up by the police.Thirty cadre from Thiruvotriyur Main Road and 18 more from Madipakkam were held for their attempted road roko. As many as 132 cadre from the CPI were arrested from various parts of the city. At Ambattur, the PMK, CPM and CPI together attempted a roko and 65 of them were arrested.
