Kolkata: In a major setback for the Bengal CID, a Bhopal court on Thursday stayed the examination of BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya in connection with an alleged child-trafficking case in Jalpaiguri district.
On July 20, CID had summoned Vijayvargiya and MP Roopa Ganguly, who is also the head of the BJP’s women wing in Bengal.
Vijayvargiya approached the court in Bhopal and filed a counter petition, claiming that Bengal CID is unnecessarily trying to harass him. He said that the charges against him are false and fabricated. After going through the petition, the court in Bhopal stayed his examination by the Bengal CID.
“I will go with the law and wait for the next order of the Bhopal court,” Vijayvargiya said.
In January, the state CID had received a complaint from the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) - a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development - about ‘illegal activities’ at Bimala Child Home and Ashray Child Home run by one Chandana Chakraborty.
During investigation, the name of BJP leader Juhi Chowdhury came out and she was arrested in March from the India-Nepal border.
Chandana claimed that it was Juhi Chowdhury who lobbied with Vijayvargiya and Ganguly to resolve some issues about her shelter home.
“There are allegations against the two for influencing CARA to grant a central aid of Rs 22.5 lakh for her (Chandana) shelter home ‘Ashray’, renew its license,” a CID officer had said.
“Chandana with their help also tried to retransfer 14 children who were sent to other child care homes after district Child Welfare Committee noted irregularities at Ashray Child Home. We want to know why Chandana lobbied to retransfer these children,” the officer said.
