Bilaspur: A single-member commission under a retired judge has been constituted to probe the botched sterilisation surgeries in Bilaspur. The death toll stands at 14 now.
CNN-IBN's Saahil Menghani travelled to Chhattisgarh's Gorrila village where women of the protected Baiga tribe have been made to undergo sterilisation surgeries. This tribe is particularly vulnerable because of their high mortality rate.
Chhattisgarh's Gorrila village is home to the Baiga tribe which is so endangered that constitution bars them from undergoing family planning measures. Yet violating that critical provision, many women of Baiga tribe were made to go undergo tubectomy at the botched sterilisation camp held in Bilaspur.
Buddh's wife Chaiti singh was one of them. He said Chaiti had sought medical help after suffering from fever. Instead of treating her, she was taken to the hospital and tubectomy performed on her.
"My wife did not know about the tubectomy, " Singh said.
Villagers has alleged that in an attempt to cover up Chaiti's fingerprint was taken on a letter after her death saying she had willingly undergone the surgery.
Chaiti's husband said that his wife never used to put a thumb impression on documents as she knew how to sign.
An 11-year-old's mother Mangali Bai has been struggling for her life in hospital. Mangali too belongs to Baiga tribe which means even her tubectomy was against norms. She too was in the dark.
