THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP has alleged that by reinstating a controversial IPS officer like Tomin Thachankary who is facing NIA probe, the government had surrendered to anti-national forces and mafia gangs. BJP spokesman George Kurien told a news conference here on Saturday that the government decision was a surrender to the Muslim League and Kerala Congress leadership which were patronising Thachankary. He said the decision was against the spirit of the LDF Government’s affidavit filed in the High Court on May 4, this year. In that affidavit, the government had said that Thachankary was a repeated offender, Kurien claimed. He pointed out Thachankary in an affidavit filed on March 31, submitted that he was not pressing for reinstatement. Union Minister Mullappally Ramachandran had also spoken against Thachankary. Thachankary was an accused in a case involving lock-up torture. While this case was scheduled for hearing in the Chief Judicial Magistrate court at Alappuzha on November 18, on the same day morning the government appointed Thachankary as MD of Marketfed. Kurien also alleged that Thachankary, in his effort to get a passport, on November 9 gave an affidavit in the Passport office, Kochi, claiming that he was not an accused in any case. In spite of the recommendation of a top police officer, the Passport officer had sought confirmation from the Police Department. Kurien alleged that Thachankary was close to various LDF and UDF leaders and had the confidence that these leaders would come to his rescue. The BJP leader asked why Pinarayi Vijayan had not commented on Thachankary’s reinstatement and posting. Pinarayi should make his stand clear on Thachankary issue. Referring to the controversial businessman T G Nandakumar’s close link with the Opposition leader, Kurien said BJP wanted a probe by an agency like CBI against him.
