Vadodara: The body of 24-year-old student Tosha Thakkar, who was allegedly raped and murdered in Sydney by a teenager who shared an accommodation with her, was cremated on Saturday.

Tosha, daughter of local businessman Sunil Thakkar, was murdered on March 9 and her body was found stuffed in a suitcase near a canal in Sydney in Australia.

Her mortal remains reached the Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport at around 3 AM and were brought to her residence in Bajwada locality before being consigned to flames at a crematorium in Karelibag area.

Hundreds of people including BJP MP Balkrishna Shukla, local MLA Bhupendra Lakhwala, former health minister Nalin Bhatt joined her funeral procession.

Tosha shared a house with the accused teenager Daniel Stani-Reginald, an Australian of Sri Lankan origin, who was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting and killing her.

Thakkar was studying accounting at the Sydney College of Business and IT, which collaborates with Southern Cross University, and was a permanent resident of Australia.

Thakkar had migrated to Australia about two years ago and was in the last semester of a post-graduate accounting degree. She was planning to return to India when she graduated.

Terming the incident as unfortunate, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna had said that India was monitoring the investigations in the case.
