In a shocking incident, a boy studying in the eighth standard was allegedly beaten by his school headmistress, which made him fall down, causing serious head injuries.
The incident occurred at LMS HSS Chempoor, Ottasekharamangalam, on July 19, following which the student was admitted to Medical College Hospital and has been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the Neurology Department there.
Abhilash, son of Leela, of Roadarikathveed, Manjamcode, was beaten by school headmistress Helen Betsy Mabel for allegedly quarrelling with other students. Leela, a handicapped woman, is a widow.
A complaint has been registered by Raju, uncle of Abhilash, at the Aryancode police station on Thursday in connection with the incident.
“Abhilash fell down after he was beaten by the teacher, which caused serious injury in his head. The school authorities left the boy at a private hospital near the school, from where he was referred to Neyyatinkara Taluk Hospital and then to Medical College Hospital. The boy was unconscious then and later, only after he gained consciousness, did we realise that he was beaten by the teacher,” says the complaint.
However, the police said that the boy has been epileptic from childhood and that might be the reason for his falling down. “The investigation is on. We have not received the medical report on the condition of the student. But, on preliminary enquiry, it seems that the caning by the teacher had nothing to do with the head injury of the boy,” said Aryancode sub-Inspector Justus.
But the relatives of Abhilash denied that he had any epileptic problem. They also said that the condition of the boy, who gained consciousness on Thursday morning, was not yet stable.
The school authorities were unavailable for comment.
