HYDERABAD: At the height of the recent London riots, when “thugs” were smashing shops and running away with goodies, a group of Londoners took to the streets with mops and broomsticks to clean up the mess on their streets. In our twin cities, a day after GHMC workers boycotted work, it seems most of the Hyderabadis were content to sleep amidst the stink rather than take the initiative! The State capital was littered with heaps and heaps of garbage, be it Kundanbagh, ministers’ quarters, Begumpet and even the posh Jubilee Hills!“Since yesterday, they (GHMC workers) have not come to pick up the garbage. We cannot store garbage at home! It’s pathetic,” complained Sangeeta, a home-maker and resident of Road No 10c, Jubilee Hills. For Srinagar Colony residents, the sight of a pack of dogs sniffing at dustbins is nothing new. On Thursday, it just turned from bad to worse. Kamala, a resident, observed, “The overflowing garbage bin has been lying here uncleared. I prefer taking a detour to avoid the stink.” To be fair, the workers’ flash strike, which has been thankfully called off this afternoon, hasn’t had that much impact on colonies like Arora and Jubilee Hills. “We have local workers who clear the scrap,” explained Harish, a watchman, at Arora Colony. Indira Nagar residents usually find it comfortable to dump the waste by the roadside. On Thursday, the strike made no difference. But a local shop owner, Venkatesh put it in perspective. “Not everyone can pay for disposing of the waste.” Of all the people, a coconut vendor came across as a clean chap. After his work at Ameerpet, he cleaned up the trash at his cart himself. Time for a lesson from him on staying clean?
