COIMBATORE: Burglars made away with 57 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 52,500 in cash from the house of a software engineer at Maniakaranpalayam, when the inmates were away for New Year celebrations on Sunday. According to police, Suresh Kumar, working in a private software company, had left the house at 2nd Avenue, Ashok Nagar at Maniakaranpalayam on December 31 along with his family, to celebrate the New Year in his ancestral town Pollachi. When the family returned on Monday, they were shocked to find the grill gate broken open and the house in a disarray.A total of 57 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 52,000 cash kept in two cupboards were missing. On information, the Saravanampatty police arrived at the spot. Fingerprints were lifted from the scene of the crime by experts. Police said that the burglars had opened the cupboards using the keys that were lying nearby. A sniffer dog was also pressed into service.Police suspect that the burglars would have had prior knowledge about the family’s outstation plans. “We have formed three special teams to nab the culprits. In view of the increasing number of burglaries in the area, we have intensified patrolling in Ganapathy and the surrounding areas. Also, residents should not leave valuables in the house when they are away,” said City Police Commissioner T P Sundaramurthy, who visited the scene of crime and held investigation.
