The Union Cabinet met on Wednesday to discuss the allegations of corruption in the Commonwealth Games.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet met on Wednesday to discuss at length the allegations of corruption and tax evasions by various agencies and officials involved with the Commonwealth Games.

The issue figured at the Cabinet meeting this morning with at least three ministers expressing concern that leaks relating to alleged Games corruption, as well as the negative reports in the media, were denting the Government's image, sources said.

Urban development Minister Jaipal Reddy, Sports Minister MS Gill as well as Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the negative publicity in the press could impact the credibility of the Shunglu Committee findings.

The government had named a high-level committee headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General VK Shunglu to examine all matters related to the conduct of the mega event.

The committee would present its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh within three months and look into all matters relating to the organisation and conduct of the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games.

Terming the Commonwealth Games as a “very big scam”, BJP President Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the investigation should include all agencies of the Centre as well as of Delhi Government.

Claiming that the corruption “started at the top”, Gadkari squarely blamed the Congress party, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Cabinet for corruption allegations in the Games.

Gadkari questioned why the PMO and Union Cabinet did not verify before approving the "inflated budget" of various Games projects.

Gadkari had earlier threatened to expose corruption within the government in the Commonwealth Games. He said the CBI should also investigate the corruption charges and submit its report within three months.
