KOCHI: Syro-Malabar Church Major Archbishop Mar George Alencherry, who was recently elevated to the status of Cardinal, was accorded a warm reception at St Mary’s Basilica in Kochi on Saturday.The Cardinal said on the occasion that the truth, which is at the core of all religions, should be valued and given utmost importance through discussions and debates. “Our land is enriched with diversities, and in such a scenario, every one should strive for unity, which alone can make our country march forward,” he said.All bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church and representatives of other denominations were present on the occasion. Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio and Tiruvalla Archbishop Thomas Mar Kurilos addressed the faithful gathered at the church. Archbishop of Verapoly Francis Kallarakkal and Ernakulam-Angamali Archdiocese pastoral council secretary Binu John felicitated the newly-appointed Cardinal. Soosa Pakiam, Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram, was also present among the clergy. Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas, Excise Minister K Babu, Kochi Mayor Tony Chammani, Justice Cyriac Joseph, Saju Paul MLA and Jose Thettayil MLA were also present at the felicitation ceremony.
