Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted its preliminary report on Netai killings before the Calcutta High Court in a sealed envelope on Friday.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered that the investigation into the carnage at Netai where nine villagers were killed be handed over to the CBI from West Bengal's Criminal Investigation Department on February 18.
The two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel and Justice Asim Kumar Roy had asked the CBI to report the progress of investigation before the court in 15 days time. The case has been adjourned for two weeks.
The West Bengal government had challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court through a special leave petition. The state government is going to file an affidavit on Friday, containing the letters exchanged between Home Minister P Chidambaram and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee after the Netai incident.
The court had directed the state government to file the affidavit on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the government submitted details of the communication between Bhattacharjee and Chidambaram to the apex court, after it was pulled up for not filing these documents.
Nine villagers of Netai in Paschim Medinipur district were killed on January 7 when 'harmads' (hired goons), allegedly engaged by some local leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), opened fire at villagers gathered there.
