New Delhi: Luv Ranjan's 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' provided Divyendu Sharma the desired platform in the Hindi film industry. He plays Omi in David Dhawan's 'Chashme Baddoor'. Divyendu opens up about his methods and relationship with David Dhawan during a candid conversation.
Q: The character of Liquid gave you a footing in the industry and now you have come up as Omi. What's the difference between the two characters?
A: It's a very different character, Liquid was very emotional, he reacted to everything spontaneously, he spoke whatever came to his mind. On the other hand, Omi is very romantic at heart, he is a shayar, his thought process is very distinct.
He is not someone who is there on your face saying shayari, he is saying shayari with one hand distance, it's not like he is saying you 'come let me do some comedy for you because it's a comedy film.' I was very clear in my mind that I have to do shayari in a very shayarana manner no matter what the nature of the line is. My character doesn't think I am a comic character so he says what he feels.
Q: What's your strongest attribute as an actor?
A: I think my forte as an actor is drama, so I approach even comedy through drama, it's not like just jumping on the screen, it's always backed by emotions. Comedy is among the difficult things so you need to make it convincing. A character like Liquid spoke so much on the screen that there was a danger that people may say, 'who is this guy yaar and why he speaks so much,' so I was under pressure. And that's where your art and craft comes.
Q: I am sure you have thought about being typecast after 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama'.
A: I was scared indeed. I could have played Liquid in a different manner as well with glasses on and with nice hairstyle but that would have been cheating. I played the gamble there and people liked me. Now, if you are liked in your first film then it has both advantages and disadvantages. Here your craft becomes your artillery so when I got 'Chashme Baddoor' I thought this is the chance when I should show the other side of my personality.
Q: Lately, David Dhawan was also under scanner.
A: See, if we doubt David Dhawan's talent for one 'Rascals' then it's like doubting our own talent. He has made nearly 40 films with a success rate of more than 90% , suppose Divyendu has done five films in which he receives appreciation and then he does another film which is not as good as others then you can't say that Divyendu is a bad actor.
You also need to understand that there are thousand other things involved in a film, so one man can't be blamed for everything. Since my theatre and FTII days, I have not trusted anyone as much as I trust David sir. His style is different, he always has a script but he won't give it to you. I asked him with quite a scared heart that 'sir, thoda script mil jaati toh..,' then he says, 'Divyendu, meri film me aisa kuch nahi hota jo tu ghar se prepare kar ke aaye. Set pea aa, scene padh aur jake shot de' (There is nothing in my film which will prompt you to prepare at home. Come to the sets, read the scene and go in front of the camera). So I was like fair enough, it's a completely different school of thought, let's try it as well. I did the same on the first day and I was at ease. You can't refute a different ideology just because you don't understand it. He handles his actors so nicely even without saying anything. You won't even realise it at times.
Q: What are the projects in pipeline?
A: Recently, I have done some indie films such as 'Rave' and 'Zaalim Dilli'. I want to see where do I stand after this film.####
